Surrealism & Frida Kahlo Art

A new painting/illustration of Frida Kahlo. Her self portraits were so severe sometimes that I like to paint her in a fun light showing her sense of humor and her love of animals and birds. This one is titled MY CAGE.

Frida Kahlo Snowman Sculpture Snow Art Painting

Frida Kahlo loved animals and birds like we do. A little girl made a Frida Kahlo Snowman or Snow Girl. She used shiny river rocks for her eyes and sticks for eyebrows and liner, a cranberry mouth (so cute) and she used some cranberry juice for her cheeks and a carrot for her nose. An apple for a red flower and she made Frida as a Tree! (You would remember I had started Frida as Tree series of paintings and I wanted to add some new ones.) The little girl is in my head and
is me as I haven't completely grown up.

Frida Snow Sculpture is also a great bird feeder and the wee girl has put apples on her "branches" for food and places for weary birds to rest. The blue birds love it.

We've only had spits of snow flurries every day. I can't wait for snow to try some snow sculptures!

FRIDA KAHLO Primitive Dolls

Frida's birthday celebration continues here which started on July 6th. This delightful and adorable Frida Kahlo doll is the first in the Frida Kahlo Birthday Dolls. She has been sold and is off to her new home, traveling with her cat close. Who needs a cat carrier when you have two loving arms? And cats attract birds or is it the other way around? How could you make Frida dolls and not make her some animals and birds for company?

My dolls are handmade from my original designs and each is handpainted and not on printed fabric. It is like my pantings have come to life in 3-dimensions. Each art doll is a one of a kind doll which makes them extra special and squeezable. Check back for more.

Frida Kahlo Birthday Dolls-Portraits

I am offering one of a kind Frida Kahlo Birthday Dolls this week to honor Frida's birthday today, July 6th!

Each one is handcrafted, handpainted and signed by myself. Frida stands upright by herself. Like most artists we craft what we like so it's hard to part with these dolls, but I know they will go to other art lovers.

To think, on this date today, her mother held her in her arms for the first time 103 years ago.

Baby Donkey Folk Art Daily Painting

" COME LITTLE ONE"

If you've seen a baby donkey you've seen something worthwhile! When I was young I remember begging my dad to adopt one. The request fell flat. They are just too cute and I still feel that way today.

I've painted Frida Kahlo as a tiny girl who has been given a baby donkey. Frida stands in cowboy-cowgirl boots and is going to show baby donkey the prettiest patch of flowers. I think they are going to get along great! Kitty has not been convinced yet, but will be won over shortly.

This painting has some play of patterns and colors, but the emphasis is meant to be on Frida and the baby donkey. All of the other details are fun things to explore.

Frida starting to arise out of the bud.

How do flowers unfurl so perfectly from a small bud? Talk about vaccum sealed. They are packaged by nature in a way I wish I could pack my suitcase...and to take things out wrinkle-free like the flower petals. Tell me how to do it; please? The answer I believe is life..it is the flow and energy that enables flowers to overcome obstacles and be spectacular in their place. Life causes each petal to work together.

Is there life in my paintings?... the ebb and flow of a story to be told...an understanding feeling or emotion...a wish or a dream...We all keep dreams alive.

We are in love with small pieces of paper and sticky notes. I have a new love called labels and hang tags. You can use them as gift cards or just write "you are sweet" on it and give it away to your child's teacher. We could have a contest on all the uses for them.

Frida Kahlo's Wedding Cake Painting

Frida is funny and clever even at her own wedding. She is the real bride cake topper after she jumps out of her own very large wedding cake! Diego is not to worry as he will get some delicious cake and chocolates, too. Chocolate is so wonderful; isn't it?

There are so many different flavors of wedding cakes these days. All the wedding magazines beg to be looked through now as you wait in line at grocery stores, book stores, most anywhere near registers. They are always fun to look at even if there isn't a wedding planned...the decorations, the cakes, the drop dead gorgeous flowers......I like to look at the gardens where the weddings are held.

ACEO Frida Kahlo Rabbit Mexican folk Art Painting

Aceo originals give alot of splash for a smaller amount of money than a larger original painting! They can be just as cute as 5 x 7's and 8 x10's! Who would want to hide these small treasures
away in an album? I think one of the best ways to display them is to attach an aceo to a mat board and then slip it into a frame. Stunning.




I like the pumpkin spice color of this mat. It may not be everyone's choice, but it is a nice contrast to the pink and gold colors. The gray kitty and white bunnies go with all colors!~

Rabbit Sculpture Gardening and Folk Art Painting

Gardening with rabbits can be fun when you mix the real ones with the topiary bunnies. What fun! Here is Frida Kahlo with her green thumb and her pet bunnies. The sky is the limit in topiary gardening. Your imagination and clippers decide how cute it will be. It helps to start with healthy plants and keep them well fed. Repot once a year and trim back the roots. They like to eat good like the rest of us. I am trying to keep my gardening impulses under control. We gardeners tend to get itchy by the end of January.

For the colors of this painting I went old world with rich yet muted orange, pink, and browns. Basically I just looked at some of my clay pots and used the colors I saw on them.

DECORATING Valentine Cupcakes Art Frida Kahlo

Today is cupcake day. This morning I sketched out how I wanted to decorate my Frida and Diego cupcakes and instead of going to the kitchen I started "stirring and cooking" on canvas. Less messy, but not as tasty.

I consciously painted this one in all warm colors. Do they have blue valentine hearts? I know they do have blue cupcake wrappers. The colors were radiant I thought. Just like bold pop art. Then I experimented with some staining (something I have never used til today)...and wow it took it down quite a few notches in boldness and gave it a rather primitive, grungy feel. I used a fine art pencil to write in the letters and words on the valentine heart mouths.

FRIDA KAHLO and Doll Self Portrait Folk Art Painting

This is the first in a new body or group of paintings that I've started. Frida as a palm or coconut tree titled STANDING TALL. She has her own Frida Tree Doll with her. It's meant to kind of blend a bit so that you have to look twice to see what it is.

I am not a big fancier of using chemical aging or antiquing dyes and such. I feel just mix the colors you want and get it the very first brushstroke. It helps you learn alot about color and their hues.

Frida Kahlo and Hummingbirds Nest Painting

This is a painting I finished of Frida holding a hummingbird on a nest and it's up for sale on ebay. It could be yours. It's titled "Look Up" because you don't want to get all tangled up in your own troubles. Look up for help...look up for opportunities they are all around you. Look up for the beauty that sings a song of thankfulness.

I've had a bit of a go this past week and a half. My ear, head, sinus...earlier I lost most of the hearing in one ear just suddenly. It hurts from pressure and I was feeling a bit down til my son brought home from school something about Helen Keller. I have no excuse to mope. Thus you can see how the title of this painting came about.

Hummingbirds are the busiest little birds. They love sweet nectar from flowers and also tiny little insects like gnats. Those little tiny gnats that we detest during the summer because they buzz around your face and are bothersome because you tend to inhale them. I read that they find a feast in a spider's web. They eat the little bugs caught in it and then the spider and then they steal the spider web and use it as nesting material. Imagine a spider's web thread to hold your nest together? The shimmer from the sun and the moonlight....and then when the dew leaves it's pearls strung on it...it must be beautiful.

The joys of having tea with friends! And what are the rules again? The no-no's are do not curl your pinkie finger up and out. It curls back to your palm along with your ring finger. Pointer and middle finger hold the handle and thumb on top of handle.

Look at Mr. Crow he is an expert on these matters. I think he's been to a few tea parties already. Young Frida is going to help dolly Frida hold the handle.

Other no no's are do not let your spoon hit the sides of your cup at any time when swirling the sugar or cream. And do not sip your spoon at any time. Most teas are served at a table but teas can also be a standing affair just like Frida's party here.

Frida's Brood- Frida Kahlo Mexican Painting

A new 5 x 7-inch painting of sweet Frida and her newly hatched chicks titled, "Frida's Brood." The hen in the painting is one of our hens. (Isn't she cute?) The feather coloring is terrific on them. (The eggs are nice too.) I hope to offer more Frida's before Christmas. Frida likes company, you know. It's up for sale on ebay now.

Frida Kahlo Folk Art Horse Painting

Sometimes people will say, "Do you ever do a painting without a white dog in it?" Yes, and here is proof. I finished this painting this morning and it is up for sale on ebay. I'm also starting to sell some prints on etsy if you want to check them out for yourself or for gifts.

I used to have a black horse when I was in 4th grade, called "Blacky." Very original, I know. I do miss her snorts and putting her head back to my leg to make sure it was still me in the saddle. Then there is that horsey smell that is kind of an acquired liking. Our neighbors have 13 horses in the field next to us so I hear the whinies and the snorts often.

About this painting: It is of Frida's Black Mare named, "Raven". I love the horses legs. I felt like I was paintng my very own on the front of the horse. Well, okay. Almost. Raven knows where the flowers are still blooming for Frida to wear in her hair. Frida tucks them in Raven's mane, too. A woman loves flowers, you know. I also tried to paint my own cowboy (cowgirl) boots. Why are they still called cowboy boots?

Kitty has a face with white fuzz on it from playing with the white cotton yarn. I have this exact little old-fashioned singer sewing machine!
