Godinger Silver and Pomegranates

Vintage looks better when it looks well, vintage. I got this Godinger silver plate platter at the thrift store and I don't think it was ever used. It looks too shiny for me, but I know in just a month or two if left out it will start to tarnish beautifully. Plump red grapes, juicy blackberries and tart pomegranate seeds look sassy on the tray. The tray is a bit gawdy for me, but when it's filled up properly it looks just right! The last photo is a new modern tray from Godinger. Wouldn't this leaf handled hammered tray look great on a wall? On another note, I read that one of Godinger's best selling items is their flatware called "Old Country Roses" which was designed to go with Royal Albert's Old Country Roses China.

Organic Fall Bouquet

It stopped raining and I went for a walk in the yard.
I came back with an armful of wild, floral fragments picked
up off of the ground or snipped. There is such an abundance
of foliage and seed heads right now to play with. But first,
I love how the yellow rose pulls out the yellow and greens
in the apple above.

I dropped them in my soup tureen and they were a feast
for my eyes against the white bowl and also inside on
the white table.

I don't know if you can see everything in this bouquet,
but these are a few peony seed heads that I think are
architectural and striking with the pink grass seed heads.

I threw out hay to the sheep and saw the vacant bee nest.
The hornets make nests way up high on the barn ceiling
and when they're empty of bees they'll fall down
onto the hay. They look a little like morel mushrooms!
A nice texture. The few red leaves are from the
sugar maple tree.

Watermelon Strawberry Soup for July 4th

Two easily available fruits whipped into a chilled soup sound great for an appetizer July 4th before the barbeque. Zentan Restaurant serves this in Washington D.C. One of the key ingredients is yuzu juice, not so readily available where I am cooking. I think I'll add grapefruit juice instead, along with mint and creme fraiche!

Holidays are the only events where we are like the French and Italians where we set around the table for hours on end and enjoy it immensely. Our meals. Our family. Our independence.
Bon appetit!
